“haiti summed up just about everything that Graham Greene required in a foreign destination (…) it was distressed, tropical, ramshackle, overcrowded, poor and on the brink of civil war. it was governed by a bogeyman. it was famous for its brothels and its slums and its weird expressions of religious faith – catholicism and a mishmash of african ritual. (…) its ornate hotels were in a state of decay, yet there was enough alcohol available (…) the tourists had given up on it – too frightened. the only expatriates in the place were shady businessman and foreign ambassadors, with the requisite number of bored wives. Add to this voodoo, political tyranny, rum punch and sunshine, and the result is an agreeable and colorful horror”.

para actualizar o livro de Greene a 2008 só se precisava juntar à prole de expatriados “the UN and its humanitarian and development workers”. e estes “comedians” podem não ser dos melhores de se ler, mas resumem bem relações interpessoais nascidas de uma atractiva frase “comedy is meaningless but is at least a relief from misery and sadness”. risos nas piores das alturas fundaram relações que mantenho até hoje: durante dramas – menos complexos – das aulas de geoquímica, durante crises em timor, durante faltas das coisas mais básicas em vários sítios recônditos, durante as cheias no haiti. e quanto maior a tragédia, mais aguçada se torna a vontade de rebentar em risos – vontade matreira, bem escondida logo por baixo da flor da pele. “you need a sense of humor to believe in God, he says, but humor is also useful in Haiti”. “trade has failed, agriculture has failed, even rebellion has failed”.

não sei se o livro se recomenda, ainda não consegui perceber bem. mas lê-lo está-me a dar bastante prazer. imagino que “The Comedians” traduzido para “Os Comediantes” não seja tão apelativo.
